You want to shift D7:D9 up to cells D2:D4 and D2:D6 is empty. The result is the same whether you use Shift Up/Down or Cut/Paste as long as there is no data to preserve which is located inbetween the old and new locations. These methods also adjust formula references to the content to point to its new location. As discussed in Formula Adjustments during Copy and Move for shifting up/down you can also use Edit → Delete cells → Shift cells up or Insert → Cells → Shift cells down. You can Undo multiple times.Ĭut/Paste is the basic, most flexible tool, and perhaps simplest to understand. If you make a mistake, or if the result is not as expected, just use Edit → Undo to restore the previous content in your spreadsheet. When you use Cut/Paste, any formulas which referenced the content's cells are adjusted to reference the new location of that content. The content will reappear when you Paste in the new location.

When you Cut, the content will disappear.

You want to shift D2:D4 down to cells D7:D9. You want to shift D7:D9 up to cells D2:D4. You can use Cut/Paste to move the content up, down, left, right, diagonally, or even to another sheet.

Select the upper-left cell of the new location for the content.
